Best EMF Protection: Your Definitive Guide

Best EMF Protection: Your Definitive Guide

Everything you Need to Know About Getting the Best EMF Protection

No matter where you are, it is impossible to avoid all electromagnetic field (EMF) radiation. It blasts us daily from the cosmos, earth and most modern-day electronics. In this article, we will cover EMF in-depth along with ways to provide the best EMF protection for your family.

What is EMF Radiation?

EMF consists of both visible and invisible and ionizing and non-ionizing radiation waves on the electromagnetic spectrum. Ionizing radiation is high-frequency radiation, the obviously dangerous kind that includes x-rays and ultra-violet rays from the sun. This radiation has long proven to be detrimental to human health because it can alternate the growth of cells.

Non-ionizing radiation is low-frequency and comes from less obvious sources like nearly all of our modern electronics. Both radio frequency (RF) and microwave fall into this type of radiation and have been touted as “safe” for humans. Research, however, is leaning in the other direction. In fact, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) states, “Intense, direct exposure to RF and microwave radiation may result in tissue damage…”

Sources of Low-Frequency EMF Radiation

Sources of EMF radiation are nearly everywhere we go. Obvious sources include power plants, power lines and radio or cellular towers. Less obvious EMF-emitting devices include cell phones, computers, Wi-Fi networks, smart electricity meters, Bluetooth devices, remote controls and microwave ovens.

Regulations on EMF Radiation

The government has set forth regulations on how much EMF a device can emit, and it is measured in Watts per kilogram, or W/kg. This measurement is known as Specific Absorption Rate (SAR), and is the amount of EMF the body absorbs from contact with the device. For example, cell phones may operate at 1.6 W/kg.

How does EMF Radiation Affect Humans?

The danger in EMF radiation comes not only from the radiation emitted, but also from our close and continual contact with these devices. Consider the way a smart watch, fitness tracker or Bluetooth headphones are used. These devices are worn at all times and are continually pulsing radiation through your body to communicate with other devices.

Even very low frequency EMF radiation, like the kind from these devices, can cause mutations in the DNA of human cells. This study, published in the Central European Journal of Urology concluded that there was a correlation between the mobility of sperm cells and exposure to cell phone radiation. Not only did the sperm motility decrease in those exposed to EMF radiation, but DNA fragmentation was higher. This study, published in Electronic Physician, concluded that EMFs have a detrimental effect on sex hormones, pregnancy, gonadal function and fetal development.

This article, ”EMFs and Childhood Lukemia,” published in Environmental Health Perspectives, lists a plethora of studies conducted linking occurrences of childhood leukemia to living in close proximity of power mains and higher exposure to power EMFs.

The World Health Organization’s (WHO) International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has also found RF EMFs to be “possibly carcinogenic to humans” because of an enhanced risk of glioma, a type of brain cancer, due to wireless phone use.

On a day-to-day level, an abundance of EMF in your home or workplace can cause mild disturbances. Some of these health problems related to EMF exposure include:

  • Migraine / Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Nerve Pain
  • Tinnitus
  • Sleep Issues / Insomnia
  • Anxiety and Depression
  • Desesthesia (painful itchy sensation)
  • Fatigue
  • Lack of focus and memory loss
  • Irritability
  • Changes in Brain Activity (electroencephalogram)
  • Nausea
  • Weight loss / appetite loss
  • Skin Tingling & Burning

Protecting Yourself from EMF Radiation

Though numerous studies have linked EMF exposure to dangerous and even deadly health conditions, it seems no one is heeding any warnings. For that matter, there are few warnings to avoid EMFs in general. It makes sense when you consider that the EMF-emitting culprits are some of the biggest money-making items for many companies.

Because of this, protecting yourself from the harmful effects of EMF exposure fall into your own hands. Do not worry, this is where we can help. If you are not interested in relocating to the middle of nowhere and living off-grid like the rest of us, you will find many of the following products helpful in lowering EMF radiation in your home.

EMF Protection

Identifying EMF hot spots in your home is the first step in figuring out how to protect yourself. An EMF detector is a device that can alert you to trouble areas in your home. Check out our earlier article about some of the best EMF meters to find radiation in your house. Read on for more information on EMF protection.

Wireless Networks

Your wireless network is one of the larger sources of EMF radiation in your home. Luckily, there are ways to fix this. A Wi-Fi Router Guard is a stainless steel mesh box that fits over your wireless router and uses the Faraday cage technology to limit harmful radiation from escaping. It works by physically blocking RFs that are larger than the holes in the cage.

Another way to reduce EMF associated with wireless routers is to go back to a wired internet system in your home. It may seem counterintuitive to switch back to an old-school wired system, but when you consider all the devices sending and receiving from your Wi-Fi router, it just makes sense. If returning to wired internet service is something you might consider doing, check out this article we published for tips on making the switch.

Smart Meters

A smart meter is put in place by the electric company to replace your old meter. They electronically send data to the company so that manual meter readings are no longer necessary. Though it is out of your control if your power company chooses to install a smart meter at your home, you can find loads of Smart Meter Covers like this one to reduce some of the EMF radiation emitted from it.

Lighting and Electrical Cords

Even light bulbs expose you to levels of EMF radiation. Incandescent bulbs give off the least amount of EMF radiation, and Smart Bulbs connected to Wi-Fi give off the most. If you truly want to reduce EMFs in your home, going back to incandescent bulbs is the best emf protection choice.

Electrical cords are also constantly emitting a steady stream of EMF radiation. Instead of completely rewiring all of your electric devices, you can make sure these cords are not located near popular sitting areas or near the bedside. A Shielded Extension Cord like this one is another way to keep EMFs out of frequented areas. You might also need to separate groups of cords congregated in the same area.

Personal Devices

Personal devices and their proximity to our bodies might be the biggest cause of EMF-related health issues. These can include cell phones, fitness trackers, smart watches, Bluetooth devices, cordless phones, wireless headphones, remote controls, tablets, and laptop computers. Aside from tossing them all in the garbage, there are ways to reduce EMF emissions while still using them.

Cell phone cases like this DefenderShield cover your phone so that even while you are speaking on it, you are protected from EMF. These cases are also a great asset for those who carry their phones in shirt or pants pockets. Similarly, EMF-reducing cases are also available for tablets.

Bluetooth ear buds should be avoided because of their incredibly close proximity to the brain, and the fact that they send waves directly through your head to each other. Though most Bluetooth devices have a much lower SAR, continual use can have detrimental effects.

There are also some important tips to follow when using your personal electronics to help reduce your exposure to EMF radiation. These tips for the best EMF protection include:

  • Do not keep your cell phone next to your bed at night
  • Do not carry your cell phone in pockets, but rather in bags or purses
  • Use a wired headset while speaking on your cell phone
  • Cordless phones should be turned off at night if possible
  • Turn off Wi-Fi or Bluetooth in fitness trackers while using and upload data later
  • Do not use Bluetooth head phones or ear buds
  • Use your laptop on a desk or lap pad instead of directly on your lap
  • Place your television remote on a side table when not in use
  • Stand back from a microwave oven when in use or simply do not use one
  • Avoid the use of smart home accessories requiring Wi-Fi connections

Avoiding EMF Radiation in Daily Life

Though it is impossible to avoid altogether, you can make significant steps to reduce your exposure to EMF radiation. Begin by making small changes by investing in an EMF-blocking cell phone case, and work your way up to reducing EMF in your home. Studies show the risks of EMF exposure, and it is time we accept and prepare for them accordingly.
