Most people are ready to jump right on the latest and greatest technology bandwagon like 5G cellular networks. However, if you are concerned with electromagnetic field (EMF) radiation, you might be wondering if this latest innovation is safe. In this article, we will explore 5G technology, 5G dangers and ways to avoid it.
What is 5G Technology?
The term “5G” stands for fifth generation and is the latest technology for cellular data networks. The 5G networks are supposed to be faster and allow for larger amounts of data to be processed at one time. There are three bands of 5G including low-, mid-, and high-band. Both low- and mid-bands operate in a similar manner as our current 4G networks using frequencies from 600-700MHz (low-band) up to 2.5-3.5GHz (mid-band).
High-band 5G operates on 24-39GHz, which jumps above radiofrequency (RF) and microwaves and uses millimeter waves for data transmission. This is where 5G differs from prior technologies. Millimeter waves can only travel so far and require antennas or towers every few miles, meaning they will be located in many more places than standard cell towers. These will be mostly used in city-centers or other densely populated areas like sports arenas.
Millimeter waves are currently used in airport body scanning technology, which has been deemed “safe” because of the brevity of exposure time. Unfortunately, few studies exist on millimeter wave exposure on a continual basis, and thus 5G dangers.
What are the Dangers of 5G?
Because it is such a new technology, it is hard to determine long-term effects of exposure to 5G millimeter waves. One can assume that since the International Agency for Research on Cancer has determined the RF from cell phone usage to be “possibly carcinogenic to humans,” continuous exposure to 5G millimeter waves can be far worse.
Cell phones and other electronic devices like microwave ovens, Wi-Fi routers and Bluetooth devices all operate on lower frequencies of the electromagnetic spectrum than 5G. In fact, millimeter waves fall between microwaves at the low end and infrared at the high end on the spectrum.

We already know that exposure to low-frequency EMF can cause health issues like migraines, sleep issues, tinnitus and infertility. It is safe to assume that exposure to 5G network radiation, operating at higher frequencies poses similar if not greater risks to our health. Even the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) offers these guidelines for reducing RF exposure, all but assuring us the health risks exist.
How do you Know if you Live Near 5G Towers?
Finding out if 5G has made it to your area can be tricky. First, high-band 5G cannot be measured on regular EMF meters because of its higher frequency. Second, unless you are using a device with 5G capabilities, there is no indicator of its presence. This Ookla 5G Map is one of the best resources we have found for locating 5G towers in your area.
Not only does the Ookla Map show you 5G towers that are currently in use, but also towers that are erected and not yet in use. This lets you know ahead of time if you need to begin taking measures to protect your household from the dangers of 5G.
As we mentioned, most standard EMF meters cannot measure the high-band of 5G in frequency ranges of 24-39GHz. You would need a much more expensive Spectrum Analyzer. Even this one by OSCIUM can only read up to 10GHZ—well below 24GHz, so you may find yourself spending a lot of money on one.
Are There any Government Regulations on 5G?
As it stands, the FCC appears to be fast-tracking the implementation of 5G networks and the erection of antennas and towers. They have adopted or amended federal rules they attest were meant for antiquated cellular communications. This process has been named the “5G FAST Plan.”
Since many of the largest, and wealthiest, cell companies are heavily investing in 5G, it makes sense that the 5G FAST Plan, which includes speeding up of federal, state and local review of infrastructure and small cells, would be implemented. However, which rules are being amended or implemented to ensure 5G is safe?
What can be Done About 5G Implementation?
Some cities like Portland, Oregon, have passed city resolutions demanding the FCC update its testing on the effects of 5G transmissions on health and the environment. Other communities have won cases to block the installation of 5G towers in residential areas.
Unfortunately, none of the cases against 5G have slowed down its implementation even though its safety is still in question. This means that it falls on individuals to assess their risk of EMF exposure from 5G networks and take steps to protect themselves.
How can you Protect Yourself Against 5G Dangers?
With the rapid spread of 5G networks, avoiding it will eventually be impossible. Finding out if your home is located near or within significant range of a 5G tower can be tricky. You can do some research about the local cell towers in your area and compare them with planned maps of 5G networks
If you are able to take millimeter wave readings in your home with a spectrum analyzer, you can gain an idea by the strongest readings where a 5G tower might be in your area. Again, to be able to get a proper reading, you will need to find a spectrum analyzer with at least a range of up to 24GHz.
Once you have determined the areas of your home that are most susceptible to millimeter wave EMF, you can begin making changes to reduce the exposure. There are a variety of ways to protect your home depending on how much work you want to do and how much money you can afford to spend on it. It is important to remember that you will not be able to block all EMF radiation, but you can greatly reduce it.
